If you’re reading this article, you’re well along on your journey to understanding cybersecurity and privacy programs. Still, it’s a complicated and ever-changing business, and we all need as much information and help as we can get. But if you are like most businesspeople, there are a million vendors coming at you all the time–all with their hands open but few concrete answers. It’s difficult to know who to trust and where to turn for objective advice.
Defining privacy is useful but insufficient. We will soon confront regulations governing privacy that directly impact the way we do business. It is paramount that we understand not only privacy as a concept but privacy in context. In other words, how did we get here?
What, exactly, is privacy? What does it mean? What do we understand when we describe something as “private”? Do we mean secret? Do we mean personal? Defining privacy has puzzled minds far greater than mine, resulting in a host of grand and diverse definitions of the term.
